FUEL TALK

CNG as a fuel source

Let’s talk about alternative fuels.  Everybody is familiar with gasoline and diesel but what about other fuel sources?  Other fuel sources include but are certainly not limited to: propane, biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, liquid natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural (CNG).

Right now there is a lot of talk about CNG.  The advertising we’ve heard by T. Boone Pickens has sparked much of this talk.  Pickens suggests that we should harness wind and other energy sources to free our country from our dependence on foreign oil.  In the long run he is proposing that we build wind turbines across the Midwestern United States to supply a good portion of our electricity.  Unfortunately it is a little bit hard with the current technology to run your car or heavy truck on electricity.  Pickens suggests that the short-term solution for transportation is natural gas and I believe that he is right.  You can read about his plan at http://www.pickensplan.com/theplan/.  As you read about his plan please realize that Pickens is in this so that he can accumulate additional billions.  He is not the white knight who is out to rescue our country.  He is a hard-nosed businessman seeking the almighty dollar.  Then again, that is what runs this country.  I think that it is great to seek the dollar by meeting a legitimate need and helping to solve problems.

Our country is literally awash in natural gas that could supply our transportation; home and industrial needs for many years into the future while other sources of energy are being developed.  The great news is that we don’t need to develop a new technology to be able to use CNG for transportation.  Millions of cars around the world use CNG as a fuel source right now.  The bad news is that fueling stations for CNG are few and far apart and the cost of converting your vehicle to CNG is high.  Then again, the good news is that CNG prices are very low when compared to diesel or gasoline.  Locations of fueling stations and their prices can be found at http://www.cngprices.com/index.php.

We will talk a lot more about CNG in the future.  For now you can increase your fuel mileage no matter what fuel you use with a GMX fuel conditioning system.  A GMX system will increase your mileage by 5% to 10% with every fuel that I am aware of.
